Can I use this service?
Our Community Transport Scheme is available to residents of the Melton Borough who are unable to use public transport due to age, disability, frailty, or because no suitable public transport is available.
Although the scheme is available only to eligible residents of the Melton Borough, journeys are not limited to destinations within the borough. We can provide transport to appointments, activities, and other destinations both within and outside Melton Borough, subject to volunteer availability.
We can provide transport to a wide range of essential and social destinations, including hospitals, GP surgeries, health centres, dentists, chiropodists, lunch clubs, social visits, and daytime courses. Whilst we operate on a first-come-first-served basis, when volunteer availability is limited we will need to prioritise healthcare appointments over social journeys to ensure those with essential medical needs can travel and comply with our funding requirements.
As our service relies entirely on the availability of volunteer drivers, we ask that journey requests are made at least one week’s notice wherever possible. This gives us the best opportunity to match your journey with an available volunteer. We are unable to offer a same-day service, and while we will always do our best to accommodate requests made with shorter notice, we cannot guarantee that a driver will be available.
This is not a free service. Whilst we would love to be able to offer free transport to everyone who needed it we need to cover the costs of our driver reimbursements. The cost of each trip varies on destination but our most common trips are listed below to give you an idea of what the price may be:
Melton to Leicester: £33.40 return
Melton to Asfordby (or vice-versa): £7.90
Within Melton: £7.70
Our ability to provide journeys depends entirely on our team of dedicated volunteers. If you are interested in giving something back to your community, we are always looking for new volunteer drivers. You can volunteer as little or as often as you like, and your mileage costs will be reimbursed. You can email naomi.bindloss@mlh.org.uk for an application pack or if you have any questions.
We also have a wheelchair-accessible vehicle available for passengers who require it. Please let us know if this is needed when booking your journey.
Community Minibus
Our Community Minibus is available for hire by community groups based within the Melton Borough. While the service is intended for local organisations, journeys are not restricted to destinations within the borough and can travel further afield where required.
The minibus seats up to 13 passengers, plus the driver. If anyone requires to be transported in their wheelchair, a single wheelchair space can be made at the loss of two standard seats. The minibus can be driven by a volunteer holding a standard UK driving licence, provided they are not being paid to drive. Drivers must be between the ages of 25 and 70 and meet our insurance requirements. If you need to hire a driver for the trip you can do so at a cost of £10. The trip cost is calculated based on the final mileage from pick-up to drop-off at £1.60 per mile, with a minimum mileage charge of £30.
